The Pittsburgh Plan: Profiles of First Participants

Participant #1 (Female): 

  • Began Pittsburgh Plan at age 4 
  • Age 6: read chapter books such as Charlotte’s Web; exceeded standard Plan math RESULTS 
  • Top student in AP Calculus in tenth grade
  • National Merit Finalist
  • SAT (old): 1580 (first try)
  • Admitted into numerous “elite” colleges; attending large university on full scholarship.
  • First short story published in science fiction anthology at age 16

Participant #2 (Female):  
  • Began Plan at age 3˝
  • Age 6: read chapter books such as Boxcar Children
  • Age 6: very advanced math work, including solving problems such as ˝(4x-3)=3+2x/5, expressing 3/7 as a decimal, simple trigonometric work with angles in both degree and radian measure, solving word problems involving rates, etc.
  • Top student, Honors Calculus (8th grade)
  • Excelled in Calc. 3 (9th grade) and Intro. to Math Theory (10th grade) at the U. of Pittsburgh
  • Top student, advanced Real Analysis (11th grade) and Abstract Algebra (12th grade), Carnegie Mellon University
  • National Merit Finalist
  • SAT (new): 2360 (first try)
  • Admitted into numerous “elite” colleges; attending large university on full scholarship
 
Participant #3 (Female):
  • Began Plan at age 2
  • Read chapter books before reaching age 4
  • Age 6 very advanced math work, similar to Participant #2.
  • Excelled in AP Calculus (6th grade)
  • Top student, Calc. 3 (7th grade), U. of Pittsburg
  • Top student, Math Theory (8th grade), Carnegie Mellon University. 
  • 7th Grade: achieved the top combined score in Pennsylvania on the SAT amongst thousands of gifted 7th-graders

Participant #4 (Male):

  • Began Plan at age 2˝
  • Age 6, read Harry Potter books
  • Age 6 very advanced math work, similar to Participant #2.
  • 5th grade: First Place Quantitative Score, Commonwealth of PA, PLUS test
  • 5th grade; Perfect Math Score (25), EXPLORE test
  • Will take AP Calculus in 7th grade
